Bob Janssen rode High Brow Madonna, a three-year-old mare owned by Mark & Patti Blackwell, to a fourth place finish in the Iowa Cutting Horse Association Futurity. The competition was tough, and the class was larger than expected, with 42 entries. Everyone at the show was buzzing at how competitive and solid the three-year-olds were for an early (August) futurity. The Smart Chicaway geldings (owned by Jim Bean/Catherine Hazelroth & Jeremy/Jen Lindman respectively) garnered a lot of attention in the practice pen, and each had a good run during the two go-rounds.
Bob leaves tomorrow morning for Cannon Falls, where the Minnesota Cutting Horse Association hosts its futurity beginning on Thursday. Go rounds are Thurs/Fri, with the finals being Saturday evening. The show includes a partial slate of weekend classes as well, so we’ll be cheering on our weekend non-pros as well.

Janssen Performance Horses is on the road again today, marking the official beginning of the NCHA futurity season. He will be showing the following horses at the Iowa Futurity this weekend, in their showpen debut: Red Hot Chicaway (x Smart Chicaway) owned by Jim Bean & Catherine Hazelroth, Lenas Lucky Chic (x Smart Chicaway) owned by Jeremy & Jen Lindman, and High Brow Madonna (x Highbrow Cat) owned by Mark & Patti Blackwell. He’s also showing Lindman’s 6 year old mare, Discos Hickory Stick, in the LAE classic class. This event takes place in Waterloo, IA
This marks the start of the busy season around JPH (wait…there’s NOT busy season???) as next week takes him to Cannon Falls, MN for the MnCHA futurity, and then to SD on the 9th - 12th for that association’s futurity. Bob’s very excited about his three-year-olds this year, and offers special thanks to Jim & Cath, Mark & Patti, and Jeremy & Jen for the opportunity to ride these fine prospects. Look for us on the road, and please stop in and say hi!

Cutters encountered the most challenging cattle yet this season at this past weekend’s Strait Rail Ranch-sponsored cutting. Providing a true test of horse greatness, quiet and thoughtful showmanship along with equine grittiness prevailed. With a number of clients opting to sit this cutting out, Bob Janssen arrived at Nevis with a smaller than normal string, but each of his three open horses got shown to successful money-earning performances despite the tendancy for cattle to run over horse and rider. On Saturday Bob earned second on Sunny Rey Solano in the $10000 Novice Horse class (owned by Janssen Performance Horses), and won a large and very tough $3000 Novice Horse Class on the gritty little mare, Discos Hickory Stick, for new owners, Jeremy & Jen Lindman. On Sunday, Smart Chicaway (owned by Mark & Patti Blackwell) took second in the Open, and Sunny Rey Solano won the $10000 Novice Horse. Non-pro client, Brittany Staeck, won the youth on Saturday and took second on Sunday, riding Colord By Vandals (owned by JPH) and Jon Dorau also took home first and second place finishes riding Chex R Smartest in various classes.
